The Students' Council

The Students' Council was established in 2004 and is made up of student representatives from each year group. It has a constitution, a chairperson, deputy chairperson, secretary and a teacher representative. It is actively involved with student issues in the College, as well as organising Sports Days, Music Competitions and Charity fund-raising events.

The student council had its first formal meeting on Friday 4th February 2004 set up by Declan Mowlds, a former teacher in the college. The student council is a group of students who meet regularly to discuss issues affecting students. We also hold regular meetings with school management and with our liaison officer to discuss these issues.

The aim of the council is to represent the views of the student body in order to improve school life for students. In addition to the members of the council, we have an elected chairperson, a deputy chairperson and two promotions officers as well as a secretary, assistant secretary and a Treasurer.

Constitution

On the 13th September 2006, the Student Council signed its Constitution into effect. The Constitution is a very important document as it sets out all the procedures, rules and regulations of the Student Council in Moyle Park College. This constitution is now available on our web site and can be accessed from here or from the Policies Page.

Non-Uniform Day

The Student Council has organised and run many non-uniform days since it was established in 2004. We have raised thousands of euro for charity so far. Our most recent non-uniform day, on Wednesday 18th October, raised €1304 for Dublin mother, Jennifer Nugent's life-saving operation for cancer in Mexico. Jennifer is the aunt of three students in the college. The Student Council would like to thank all students and staff who contributed to this very worthy cause. Many people gave well over the recommended €2, and to them we are especially grateful.

Battle of the Bands

The Student Councils of Moyle Park and Colaiste Chillian decided on organising some form of an event so that we could work together and learn from each other's Council, and we decided on organising a Battle Of The Bands. After months and months of hard work and planning we decided to hold it on Thursday 6th of April, in Moyle Parks sports hall, the competition was held to raise funds for UCD Volunteers Overseas. The event raised €300, and this was used to fund supplies for the organisations trip to Haiti to build housing and to provide education.

There were four bands involved in the competition, No Access, Squirel Racer , Paracitez and Wasted Case. Each band was given a set of 25 minutes to play their own songs and to cover songs from some of the greatest Artists alive and dead. The bands were judged by Ms. Harrington, music teacher of Moyle Park College and Mr McRynall the Teacher Representative for the student council in Colaiste Chillian.

The bands really played their hearts and souls out that one drummer even broke his drum kit because he was playing so hard. Between the bands playing we had some great entertainment in the form of some amazing break dancing from two Moyle Park College students, All and all the entertainment put on a good, entertaining show, played out to an audience of over 100 people. After two hours of "rocking out", the eventual winners were Wasted Case closely followed by Squirel Racer in second place.

Other Matters

The Student's Council are working on some more serious matters as well as the fun and entertainment. For the last year the Student's Council have been looking into the possibility of getting lockers in the College. We have done a lot of research from many sources such as Colaiste Chillian and Colaiste Bride who both have lockers in the schools for the students to avail of. We have looked into ways to prevent the vandalism of the lockers as well as the storing of certain objects, and also where the lockers could be stored. The main problem is the weight of bags and even if lockers could not be purchased in the near future we are looking into ways to lighten the load of the school bags mainly for the Exam years. The Students Council will carry on working on this matter and hope that in near future we could achieve an outcome. If any students have any ideas regarding lockers we would be grateful if they would contact us.

Another serious matter that we are working on is the Anti-Bullying policy. We are working hard on adding more to the Anti-Bullying policy that the school has in place at the moment. We have done research on what kind of bullying effects the student's and what should be a done to prevent bullying in our College. We have been receiving information from organisations such as Child line and other organisations that are trying to prevent bullying in the world we live in today. The Student Council sees bullying as a very serious issue, and welcomes ideas from the student body on how to tackle it.

At the moment the Student Council is preparing to hold elections for first years. We are hoping to hold these elections before the end of the first term. Should elections be successful in the college we will expand them to other years. All students are entitled to apply to be members of the Student Council, and anybody wishing to do so should get an application form off the Secretary, Paul Cooke.
