September Showcase
Jonathan McKenna 6th Year
I first got interested in Drama when I was about 7, when a friend of mine told me
about a class she went to each Saturday. She had asked me to come along,
so I did, and have been in the club ever since. That was 10 years ago and I'm still
going there to this day.My teacher is Anna Walker, who owns the Anna Walker School of Drama, and is
well known throughout the drama world. There are 8 other people in my group. Each week we play group games and
write short sketches. Every year we take part in exams with the Royal Irish
Academy of Music. These exams require us to learn poetry, drama and theory.
So far, I have completed 8 out of 10 exams, in all of which I have received either
distinction or honours. As well as this, each April we take part as a group in
the All-Ireland drama competition, Féis Maitiu. We have to write a 10-minute
piece and perform it in front of an adjudicator. In the past three years, we have
received 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the competition. I also love the club because
we are all great friends.Going to my drama group has helped me with English in school. The material
that we learn for the exams is useful when we are reading poetry and drama in
school and helps me get a better understanding of what we are reading.I am considering taking up a course in Drama in college when I finish in Moyle
Park next year. Who knows, I might even be on the silver screen some day
I can always wish!
