October Showcase
Mahmood Abdullah 6th Year
My name is Mahmood Abdullah. I am 18 years old. I came from Iraq where
I used to live in Baghad. I lived in the centre of the city where my father worked
as a mechanic. This was during Sadam Hussein's regime when things were very
uncomfortable for the population. So we left. We stayed in Syria for a month
or so until we got a visa which allowed us to come to Ireland. I had an uncle who
lived in Clondalkin so we stayed with him for a week while we looked
for our own place. We have been living there for the past six yearsWhen I came to Moyle Park College I had no English at all. I couldn't even say
"Hello!" It was very hard at the start, but now I think I have perfect English. I had
to work hard to learn the language but I got help from my teachers, especially
Ms Burke and Mr Nolan. I made good friends in school, especially in Transition
Year where I enjoyed all the trips, especially the one day we went go-karting at
City West and Mr O'Reilly beat us all at the go-karting. I feel comfortable here in
Moyle Park because there are many nationalities represented in the school.
On the weekends I go to work in town. I work in a cafe from 12:00 to 18:00. It's not
an easy job I have making coffee and delivering it to the tables. But it pays well and
keeps me in pocket money. It gives me an idea of the world of work and it keeps
me busy. It also gives me a chance to practice my English. I also enjoy playing
video games on my PSP.I hope, after I leave school, to go into pharmcy in Trinity College. I will need 555
points to get into that course. I will achieve that by the help of Moyle Park College
and the teachers there. My ambition is to become a chemist and open my own
pharmacy. I would love to go back to my native Iraq and start a business there. I will
always have good memories of Ireland and, you never know, I might come back.
