October Showcase

Stephen Farrell 4th Year

I began boxing at the age of 11 years. I became interested after I saw boxers
jogging and training around my locality. I decided to join their club,
St. Matthew's in Ballyfermot.

Although I looked forward to it, my first day was very hard. I was put into the
ring and asked to do shadow boxing. Then I was told to use the boxing bag.
This was not very enjoyable as I did not know that I had to wrap my hands
before I put on my gloves. After twenty minutes my hands were stinging but I
kept going because I thought this was normal. Ten minutes later when I took
the gloves off, my hands were bleeding. My trainer did not notice and I
went on to skipping. Although it wasn't the best start I wanted to go back.
Looking at boys sparring in the ring encouraged me to go on because I
knew that if I tried I could be like them. And even though my trainers are strict,
I have had a great time ever since.

I have also taken part in many competitions. While boxing for St. Mathews
I came second in the Dublin Championship. I have also won various
medals and trophies. However, due to an accident, I now only do club
fights. I mostly box for fun.

While boxing is not suitable for everyone, it has been a great experience
for me. I hope to continue to become a better boxer, rivalling Rocky Marciano.
