Ciaran Kelly 6th Year
Ever since I was ten I've always wanted to play guitar. For my tenth Christmas I
got my first guitar from my parents. I started guitar lessons up in the school of
music in Clondalkin village. There I learned the basic chords from my first teacher.
I soon got fed up going over the same stuff because I wanted to learn how to
play songs.I heard that there was a guitar club starting up in Knockmitten Community Centre
called Jam Factory so I enrolled myself there. I soon learned the chords of many
songs and, at the end of that term, I played a concert for the old people in the
community. That was a real boost in my self-confidence - to get on stage and
perform in front of people I didn't know. It was a thrill of a lifetime. I'll never forget
that day.The first song I learned how to play was Boulevard of Broken Dreams by
Green Day. And now I am learning songs such as Under the Bridge by The Red
Hot Chilli Peppers. At the moment I have changed groups. I am with a guitar
group called Band Factory which helps you put a band together and teaches you
about sound engineering and the mechanics of setting up a Gig.I have a passion for a lot of different types of music from Metal to Acoustic-Guitar
styled music. I have been at band practice often because on the 28th October
we - that is the band I am in - performed for the Rocktober Concert, which is held
every year to raise money for new equipment for the Band Factory projects in
the area of Clondalkin.Every time I get home from school I do an hour of practice with my band out in
my shed. We are learning such songs as Under the Bridge, Billionaire and
Hey Soul Sister and many many more. We also intend to perform in certain
youth cafés around Dublin. We are playing a gig in Lucan in late November. In the future I would like to continue to play the guitar and continue jamming at
concerts and youth café's around the country. Many people have asked me,
"Would you like to become famous?" I would love to become famous and see
my CD in stores but to an extent so I can walk down a street and not be crowded
by people. But that is in the future and who knows what the future will hold?
