November Showcase
John Mulroy 4th Year
I began playing football at the age of six. It was my dad that got me interested in
soccer. I really enjoyed playing football and my dad got me to join a team. The
first team that I played for was Manortown Under-8's. After my first year at
Manortown, I was kept back because of my age. When I got to under-11's
I changed to 11-a-side and to bigger pitches. I found it hard to adjust but I soon
got the hang of it.The following year I won the overall best player of the year for Manortown.
I was the first person other than a senior player to win this trophy. When
Manortown got relegated, I left and went to Crumlin premier for two years. I
enjoyed playing in the premier and it was a good experience. I have great
memories with Crumlin, one of which was our trip to England. Unfortunately
we got relegated and I joined my local team, St Francis. We were in the major,
which is one league lower than the premier. During that year we had great
success and won three trophies. We won the league in a playoff and won the
Solar Cup in England. We also won the Conway Cup, which was the most
memorable because we beat three premier teams, including the best team
in Ireland, Cherry Orchard. We won that match on penalties and I scored a
nerve-wrecking penalty. After that success I got a trial for the Dublin team, which I made. I am
now still playing for St. Francis under 16 premier and hope to keep playing
up until senior level.
Stop Press: John Mulroy wins FAI Schools' Player of the Year Award
Congratulations to 2008 Graduate John Mulroy who was awarded the 2009 Schools' Player of the Year award at the FAI's 19th International Awards Ceremony in the Citywest Hotel, Saggart on Sunday 8th February. The Ceremony was broadcast on RTE.
John received his award in recognition of his outstanding goal-scoring performances for the Republic of Ireland U-18 schools' side that won the annual Centenary Shield. This award adds to a glittering career since he arrived at Moyle Park in first year, six years previously. He represented the school at every level right the way through before getting the call for Leinster Schools. From there he made the leap to the national side where he shone. He has now joined Bray Wanderers and had a few run-outs with the Eircom League squad at the back end of the 2008 season.
His former school coach, teacher Eddie O'Byrne, said, " It's a major boost for the school. It's quite a big achievement; we're chuffed with it in the school. He was a vital member of the school team, the recognition he got was for his international success and the winning goal against England."
