I first became interested in music when I was in second class in primary school. A
trumpet player and a committee member from the Clondalkin Youth Band came
to visit our school. They explained what steps had to be taken to join the band.
After joining, I had a year in the beginners class on the recorder. I found this very
hard, as the theory was very difficult. After the year was over, Mr Vincent Dolan,
the Band Director, handed me a trumpet and I have been playing it since 2001. I
found this interesting as the sound of the brass instrument instils a sense of
majesty and honour. As a group we completed our grade exams with both the Associated Board and
the Royal Irish Academy. I spent a full six weeks practising and preparing for
these exams. I am now a member of the full marching band. I am also one of the
first trumpeters to help the younger members and carry the voice of the band.We represent Clondalkin, Dublin, and also Ireland in competition at home and
abroad. This year alone we have won the All Ireland Concert Band Championship
and Best Musical Performance; also, the overall competition in the International
Marching Competition in Limerick. The band has marched throughout the world
such as Savannah in Georgia min the United States of America and Kerlade in
Holland. At the moment I am studying for my Leaving Certificate. Music is one of
my subjects and I find the course very hard with the theory and practical elements.
With Ms.Harrington, our teacher, we set up a brass ensemble for the first time
in the College. This came about as the new music department was launched. The
group performed at the Carol Service hosted by the Moyle Park College Choir.
Having played at many events in the school, music is now a major part of my
school life.I hope to go to College in NMCI. I will find this a difficult task. If my move to Cork
is successful, I will continue to play with the local Concert Band.
