I started Kickboxing in Lucan in September 2008 after a friend recommended it
to me as I looking for a new interest. I joined Global Kickboxing in Lucan Village
with my trainer Jimmy Courtney. The first few weeks were really tough and I felt
exhausted after every session. I was then told I needed all my training gear, which
I got in the city centre. The cost of the equipment was reasonably priced. After
the Christmas period, the training sessions got more intense as no competitions
were held until the start of summer. In the sessions we do a variety of cardio,
sparring, bag drills, pad work and fitness training. Every week we would do
different things to work up strength, speed and stamina. It was difficult juggling
school, the musical Grease (in which I had a part) and other interests with
training and competitions.
As the summer kicked in I was involved in a competitions in Wexford. The one
in Wicklow was my first fight since joining the club. I was nervous but with
encouragement from club mates and my trainer in the corner I felt confident.
I fought a boy from Arklow Martial Arts. When the fight started the first round was
very nervous and I felt tired but in the second round I grew in confidence and
stopped before it went to the third round. I was ecstatic and had a great night all
round as my other club mates all won.
In the school there are few sports as physical as those sorts of sports and the
boxing finished before I came into 6th year, as there is little involvement in the
school.
After School, when I go in to college, I am looking forward to doing all sorts of
the physical activities such as MMA, Lao Gar kickboxing and normal boxing
in UCD. The sport has given me more self-confidence and mental strength as
well as a few mates and it's all round a bit of banter while training hard with
bigger competitions in light and full contact fights in the near future.
