April Showcase
Adam Brown 5th Year
I first became interested in music when I was about eight. I joined the Clondalkin
Youth Band along with some of my friends. We joined it for a bit of fun and did not
expect to be in it as long as this. We've done so many parades and events that
I've lost count! We've been abroad on more than one occasion and have always
been good at our music. For the first few years, the music pieces and exams are just so nerve racking
that you feel it just might kill you. But I've gotten past them (luckily) and I joined the
official band in 2004-2005 and I've been having a great time since then. I've been
to Holland in the World Band Championships which involves marching in a
certain arrangement while playing. That is not the easiest thing to do. But, by far,
the best trip ever was when we went to Georgia in America last year for the Saint
Patrick's Day parade. The crowds loved our music and we got to play along with
another band over there. The music we play has become known throughout
the world. But my interest in music did not stop there. Soon after joining the main band, I
tried my hand at guitar. When I first began, progress was slow. But, just like in the
band, it took time. Every now and then the two would collide when it came to
events and what not. But I've always been able to manage.Like most interests in life, music does not stop at what you play, but at what you
listen to. It helps to listen to a number of things. And, like in sports, when you watch
a sport it gives you a better understanding of how it is played. The same applies
to music. When you listen to a band or a musician, you can adopt their styles and
change them to suit you. After playing for a long time, you can listen to a CD and
try and play the songs you hear. This quality has helped me with playing music. It
gives me a better understanding of how songs can and should go.To my (and everyone's) surprise, my musical ability did not stop there. I recently
took part in a school production of Grease. I had sung in primary school and in
small concerts put on by the Clondalkin School of Music where I play guitar. But I
had not thought much on it. But when I went for the auditions everybody was
surprised at how well I could sing. It was during the preperations for Grease that
I finally decided to take the time to form a band. I had always wanted to, but
everytime I tried, it just didn't work out. But I finally found a group of lads who could
play music and who were all my age. We formed a month before our first gig and
only had one or two in mind after it. But, as we found out, things would get much
better for us. We asked if we could play at the Y.S.I. and our plan was to play two
songs; but they loved our sound so much that they asked us to play four instead.
Thanks to the time put into the music by all of us, we've been able to just play
anything. We have many more gigs in mind and we hope to go somewhere with it.My ambition is to be an artist (music obviously). But ambitions like that aren't
always concrete, so if not that, then I hope to teach music after school. I enjoy
anything to do with music. I try to listen to different things and put them into my
own music, but it is not easy. But I hope to someday be a recognised artist.
